It has a stimulating effect on the circulatory, glandular, respiratory, and digestive systems. It can also alleviate menstrual problems. Fennel has an ORAC of approximately 2,383,680 (TE/L). TE/L is given as micromole Trolox equivalent (micromol Trolox) per litre.Fennel is the only plant species of the genus Foeniculum within the family of umbellifers (Apiaceae) and is related to parsley.
In the Middle Ages fennel was used as protection against evil spirits and witchcraft. For centuries fennel has been considered an effective digestive aid and remedy for gynaecological problems. The ancient Egyptians and Hildegard von Bingen also have numerous records of the effects and uses of fennel. -
