Sage belongs to the Lamiaceae family of plants. The Central European sage is often cultivated in the garden. The aromatic leaves are used as a spice and also as a medicinal plant. The generic name "Salvia" is derived from the Latin "salvus" = salvation, health, well-being or "salvare" = to save. This derivation already indicates the healing power, which was already known in ancient times and the Middle Ages.

Sage essential oil should always be used with caution. The reason for this is that sage oil has a high monoterpene ketone content. Essential oils with a high content of monoterpene ketones are not suitable for children and during pregnancy. All the more pleasing is the gentle yet effective property of the hydrolate.
