Black pepper (piper nigrum) is a climbing plant of the pepper family (Piperaceae). Originally from South India, it is now widespread. The fruits are boiled and/or dried to produce white, green or black pepper.

The essential oil of black pepper is obtained by steam distillation of the fruit and has a pungent, strong aroma with a stimulating, energizing effect. Applied externally it has a positive effect on the circulation.

Black pepper has been used by man since ancient times and, like many Asian spices, has a long tradition in folk medicine.
