The yellow Carolina jasmine is often used as an ornamental plant because of its decorative, fragrant flowers. It is particularly popular in the southeastern USA, and in South Carolina it is even a "state flower". However, since this plant is actually poisonous, it was used by the Indians of North and Central America for fishing. The Othomi Indians also made the poisonous potion "Bebo-sito" (glass coffin) from the root of the Carolina jasmine plant, which paralysed the victims, fully conscious.
