The violet colour is caused by iron intercalation. The amethyst is the violet variety of crystalline quartz. This beautiful gemstone got its name from the Greek "amethystos" (not drunk), as it was generally said to protect against drunkenness.


The occurrences of amethyst are worldwide, known are the often impressively large amethyst druses from Brazil. Most of the amethysts for jewellery production also come from Brazil.
