The amethyst is the purple variety of the crystal quartzes. The violet colour is caused by the intercalation of iron in the crystal lattice. This popular gemstone got its name from the Greek "amethystos" (not drunk), because it should protect from drunkenness.
Amethyst is found all over the world. Most of the amethysts for jewellery production come from Brazil, well known are the often impressively large amethyst druses from Minas Gerais.
