The amethyst is the purple variety of the crystal quartzes. This beautiful gemstone got its name from the Greek "amethystos" (not drunk), as it was generally said to protect against drunkenness.


The occurrences of amethyst are worldwide, known are the often impressively large amethyst druses from Brazil. Most of the amethysts for jewellery production also come from Brazil. The violet colour is caused by the incorporation of iron.
