Hinoki essential oil, originally from central Japan, is extracted from the Japanese cypress, Chamaecyparis obtusa. The Hinoki false cypress is considered one of the "five sacred trees of Kiso". The wood was traditionally used to build palaces, temples, shrines, baths and the famous Noh theatres.

The oil is particularly famous for its characteristic and typically Japanese aroma. The wood is pink-brown in colour, has a slight lemon fragrance and is incredibly resistant to decay and insects. The Hinoki forests, which are highly revered by the Japanese, have been protected since the times of the Japanese feudal lords and samurai. Today the Hinoki cypress is a popular ornamental tree in gardens and parks.
