Two different minerals are combined under the umbrella term jade: jadeite and nephrite. Especially in the jewellery sector many things are often mistakenly advertised as jade, especially serpentine. The name jade (span. "loin stone") indicates that this stone has been used for a long time as a protective and healing stone against kidney problems. The corresponding Chinese name "Yü" means "beautiful stone". Jade is considered a holy stone there.

Jade (jadeite) is characterized by a very special toughness, which among other things makes this stone so valuable. In prehistoric times even weapons were made of it.

There are several sites of Hadeit. The most valuable variety is the Burmese Jade, also called Imperial Jade. Further occurrences are in China, Japan, Canada and Russia.
